ABOUT ME

My name is Kevin Sarr. Since 1990, I've been immersed in the world of fenestration. My journey began with selling architectural glass, and over time, I expanded into shower doors, storefronts, window wall systems, curtain wall systems, and windows for both historic and contemporary buildings. I even ventured into passive solar design with on-site custom-built skylights.

It's incredibly satisfying to see a building and know I played a role in its creation. There's a particular thrill in upgrading a property and contributing to its continued success. After all, the greenest building is the one that's already standing.

From a design perspective, windows and doors often define a building's personality and character, both internally and externally. Therefore, I believe that offering the best insights and the right products is paramount to any project's success.

Choosing the Right Window

Back in 1990, when I started selling glass, "low-E" was a foreign concept to most. It added about $0.25 per square foot to the cost of insulated glass units (IGUs) that were already only $2.75 per foot – a significant jump. Despite its 50% increase in energy efficiency, no one wanted to pay the premium. I remember telling my customers, "There will come a day when you won't be able to buy glass without low-E, or it will be a special order." That day arrived about 15 years ago.

Today, exterior glazing is incredibly complex and crucial. In New York City, all windows and glazing below 75 feet must be bird-friendly by law. Massachusetts has adopted the nation's most stringent thermal performance standards for building envelopes, both commercial and residential. Along the Atlantic coast, we face the challenge of meeting hurricane-rated codes, requiring specialized frames and glazing capable of withstanding missile-like impacts from wind-blown debris.

Recent events, like the devastating fires in Los Angeles, highlight the need for fire- and heat-mitigating products for both commercial and residential buildings. Institutions like the Getty Museum recognized this years ago and incorporated such measures to protect their invaluable collections.

Even historic preservation projects, which once received exemptions from modern building codes, are now subject to the same stringent requirements, particularly concerning thermal performance. Building compliance officials now demand full code adherence, regardless of a building's age.

At Navigator we have the resources and expertise to guide you through all facets of the window and glass industry so that you can design, buy, and build with confidence!
